Re: Employment, Internships and Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in being a part of IBF. Our organization is staffed predominately by volunteers and interns -- people willing to commit time and expertise to our bicycle advocacy efforts. Some donate just a few hours a month; others donate several hours a week. We welcome the talents and energy of new volunteers, and value the contributions of all volunteers to our organization.

IBF is always recruiting volunteers to undertake the following tasks. Many of these tasks can be done via your own computer. Tasks include:

  • grants researcher
  • grant writer / fund raising
  • answering technical inquiries by phone or by email
  • writing and designing education and technical materials
  • managing the web site
  • accounting and filing government/administrative forms
  • researching bicycle advocacy organizations and efforts in other countries (including the developing world, such as Africa and South America.)

Volunteering Outside North America:

We assist bicycle advocacy organizations outside of North America as our resources allow, mostly by offering technical expertise via email, mail or phone. Some organizations outside North America contact us in search of onsite volunteers to provide bike mechanic training or advanced technical assistance, either in transportation planning or organizational development.

IBF has an informal program to match such organizations with volunteers who can provide technical expertise.  Unfortunately, we cannot provide financial assistance for volunteers. Also, these organizations --most of whom are grass roots groups with little or no funding -- cannot provide funding for volunteers, but some assist with lodging and food in exchange for work.

If you are planning a trip to another country and want to be involved in such volunteer activities, please contact us, and we will try to put you in contact with an appropriate group. These grassroots groups are often very "young", and staffed entirely by volunteers who may have other critical priorities (family, jobs, etc.), so volunteering with these groups requires a lot of patience and tolerance for challenge.

Positions with the Ibike & Bicycle Africa program require a background in area studies and in-country experience.

We appreciate all offers to help IBF, and will do our best to include you. If you would like to volunteer with IBF, please contact us and let us know:

The International Bicycle Fund is an independent, non-profit organization. Its primary purpose is to promote bicycle transportation. Most IBF projects and activities fall into one of  four categories: planning and engineering, safety education, economic development assistance and promoting international understanding. IBF's objective is to create a sustainable, people-friendly environment by creating opportunities of the highest practicable quality for bicycle transportation. IBF is funded by private donation. Contributions are always welcome and are U.S. tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Please write if you have questions, comment, criticism, praise or additional information for us, to report bad links, or if you would like to be added to IBF's mailing list. (Also let us know how you found this site.)
