Pinar del Rio Program (Western Province) *Pinar del Rio Program Photo Essay Pinar del Rio Educational Program Curriculum (pdf) Schedule: November to April Description: Day 1-2: orientation and exploration in and around Havana. Day 3-6: leave Havana for Pinar del Rio province, for a schedule of stopping at schools, farms, museums, historic sites, caves, and other points of interest, and face-to-face discussions, with small groups of Cubans representing various walks of life (education, health care, agriculture, women, revolutionaries, enterprise, environmentalist, etc). Day 7-11: Return toward Havana, with additional programs on history, politics, arts, health care and more and the way. Map Features: Small group, visits to the people of the diverse cultures and lifestyles of western Cuba, beautiful landscapes of the tropical inland and coastal zones. Activities highlight culture, history, agricultural and economic diversity, geology, and lifestyle. Mileage Daily / Total: 30-80km, 18-50 miles, starts with lower mileage / 400km, 250 miles total. Cycling Conditions: 90% paved roads, mostly flat and rolling, but there are several hills (walking is OK!). The is a 16km / 10 mile section of badly deconstructed paved road, and a 16km / 10 mile section of clay/dirt/gravel road. Starting/Ending Point: Havana, Cuba Skill Level: Suitable for fit beginners/intermediate/experts who are comfort with dirt roads and hills, see cycling conditions. Other Activities: Discussions, visits to museums, historic sites, schools, health centers, homes, farms, markets, monuments, walking, music, and spelunking.
