Hippos were a real highlight – up close and personal – especially when
we were taken down to the lakeshore by some soldiers at night. First
view of the grasslands of Africa – just like the movies of Africa! (ed.:
Life imitating art?)
For me, it was an amazing feeling to sit at the viewpoint south of the equator and gaze
out over the plains and lakes with the Rwenzories at my back. Absolute silence bar the
gentle breeze in the grass and the fish eagles calling. The sense of looking out over land
that has hardly changed since human beings first walked across it. The feeling of contrast
between beautiful landscapes and tumultous political landscape, between inner turmoil and
external peace.
The slight trill of riding along a road where lions may be on patrol
and being able to convince Joe that the reason people are cutting the
grass is so that lions can’t hide in them to eat passing cyclists.
