꼽았다. 미국 시애틀에 본부를 둔 국제자전거재단은 무동력 운송 수단을 위한 도시 설계, 자전거 안전 교육 자전거 여행 기획 등의 활동을
하는 시민단체다. 그는 자전거 여행을 위해 5일 한국에 왔다. 인터넷으로 신청한 3명의 미국인과 함께 11일부터 시작해 경주에서 제주까지 자전거로 남녘땅을 누빌 계획이다. 이미 지난해 10월 서울에서 출발해 강원도와 동해안을 거쳐 제주까지 1개월 동안 답사 차원의 자전거 여행을 했던 그다.
“한국의 산하는 무척 아름답습니다. 지난해 자전거 여행을 할 때 푸른 산과황금빛으로 물든 농촌 마을의 모습을 봤을 때 황홀했어요” 그는 우리나라가 자전거 여행을 하기에 매우 좋은 곳이라며, 그 가운데서도 제주도를 으뜸으로 꼽았다. 국제자전거재단은 후원자들과 자전거 여행 등을 통해 마련한 재원으로 제세계를 지원한다. 아프리카 짐바브웨에 자전거 도로를 만드는 일을 도왔고, 에리트리아에 자전거 부품을, 쿠바에는 자전거를 보냈다. 그의 자전거 여행은 일반 관광과 달리 지속가능한 운송 수단 도입을 위한 운동의 한 방법이며, 환경 대재앙 같은 자연의 경고를 무시하지 말라는 당부이기도 하다. “남극과 북극의 빙하가 계속 녹아내리고 있습니다. 화석 연료 사용과 운송 수단 때문이지요. 자전거 등 무동력 운송 수단의 사용이 많아져야 합니다. 그래야 환경 위기를 막을 수 있습니다.”
