THE PROJECT:

A public safety campaign to increase motorists' / bicyclists' awareness shared responsibility for road safety.

DESCRIPTION:

A series of twelve safety messages for motorists and bicyclists, using transit taillight display space on transit buses.  Each panel in the series includes a safety message to bicyclists and a safety message to motorists.  Space is available for sponsorship acknowledgement.  The campaign can be designed to run for 12 months or 24 weeks.

Bicyclist / Motorist Share the Road: 12 Week Summer Campaign

Bicyclist / Motorist Share the Road: 12 Month Campaign

THE NEED:

A majority of bicycle activity occurs on streets and virtually all motor‑vehicle use is on streets.  When these two modes come into conflict, as they do hundreds of times a year, the cause is almost always human error: inattentiveness, impatience, failure to use due caution, etc. Increasing the awareness and the alertness of the user groups can significantly reduce bicycle/motor-vehicle accidents.  Good automobile and bicycle driving is learned, and good driving means fewer accidents and injuries. Raising the level of alertness requires continual active participation.  An awareness program needs public reminders on safety as close to the "point of consumption" as possible.  Neither user group wants to be singled out for criticism.  By using a balanced information campaign, each group will be more willing to accept the message.  This awareness campaign will: increase recognition by road users that each has a role and a responsibility in safety, increase levels of alertness, reduce animosity between user groups, foster good will and increase road safety.
